Is RuneScape Suitable for Young Children

Is RuneScape Suitable for Young Children

RuneScape, the world’s most popular MMORPG, has been around for over five years now, receiving tremendous success with its medieval gameplay. The original idea of giving the player freedom to do anything he or she wishes to has captured the interests of millions of people around the world; however, is it appropriate for all of them? A diehard RuneScape player myself, I nevertheless cannot help but maintain that RuneScape is not the ideal game for minors for a multitude of reasons. From the first moment that a RuneScape account is created, combat is the overarching theme to RuneScape. From slaying dragons for their hides to harmless birds and implings for Hunter experience, nearly all aspects of the game quests, skills, and player killing involves fighting. Undoubtedly, this gives great pleasure to the competitive teenagers and adults of the modern world, but what ideas does it place inside the mind of a minor? Such excessive combat is not recommended for a child and is little better than handing him a game rated M+.

The worship of gods is a central theme in RuneScape. Countless gods such as Saradomin, Guthix, and Zamorak exist in the MMORPG. The game even takes the liberty of placing virtues and values upon each, deeming Saradomin the god of wisdom and Zamorak the god of chaos and evil. The worship of gods is evident in the Prayer skill where the player can bury bones and worship altars to gain special abilities “invoked” through the power of these gods. Thus, Jagex raises the issue of religion and provides imaginary deities for the players to worship as a source of recreation, an idea not suggested for minors.

As if this weren’t enough, players also have the option to train Herblore and Thieving yes, thieving. Herblore is a skill where different ingredients are combined to make potions that boost other skills. This is a controversial issue as it has been compared to the subject of making drugs in the past. Furthermore, the release of Thieving has raised an issue of concern among some. Players are given the choice to pickpocket other people, steal from stalls, and break open doors.

Even more recently, Jagex, the company that created and updates RuneScape, has allowed the chat filter to be turned off. Prior to having the option to turn off the chat filter, offensive words would be censored by the chat system. Since then, any player now has the option to disregard this and turn it off with a single click of the button, exposing some very young children to inappropriate content.

I hold no skepticism when I say that Jagex intends RuneScape to be a game enjoyable for its players. It tries its best to uphold this for players of all ages, protecting minors from the relatively harsh player community by limiting chat and such. Nevertheless, parents may wish to think again before allowing their younger children to sign up for this game.

Runescape Crafting and Runecrafting

Runescape Crafting and Runecrafting

Runescape is a browser based fantasy MMORPG that is filled with all types of fun and excitement. Runecrafting is a skill that allows players to make runes which is a very important crafting skill. There is a simple quest that you’ll have to take before learning this skill and all you need to train for it is a pickaxe. However, it’s recommended that you wear light armor and lightweight boots and have as many pouches as you can carry when runecrafting. Runecrafting allows you to make your own runes through crafting. This is a skill that all players can benefit from because runes are used in a large number of the spells within the game. Runecrafting requires players to mine Rune Essence which is found at Essence Mine and the Abyss. However, getting to these mines can be difficult. For one thing, there are only a few teleports that will transport you there.

This includes Brimstail Gnome which is located in a cave somewhere in the southwestern corner of Tree Gnome Stronghold. The Wizard Cromperty which is Northeast of Ardougne Market and Wizard Distentor located in the Yanille Magic Guild are two more areas where teleports to these mines can be found. Mining is the best way for players to get the funds needed to progress through the game and meet their goal and Rune Essence can be sold for in game currency based on the quantity you collect.

The two types of essence are called normal and pure. Normal essence is used to craft mind, body, earth, water, fire and air runes. Pure essence can be used to craft any of the runes in the game and you must be at level 30 or above before you can mine pure essence. Runecrafting can be profitable but you’ll need to find productive and convenient altars to use. Once you reach a certain level you can consider heading out into the wild where some of the best altars are located.

It will take a certain number of rune essences for runecrafting and this is based on your characters level. You will need just over four thousand, four hundred rune essence to make air runes when you’re under level 35. A little less than four thousand rune essence will be needed for players between the levels of 35 and 44 to make chaos runes. Players level 44 and up can make nature runes which can be sold for a nice price.

Crafting nature runes is not a complicated process but it does involve several steps. First, you’ll need to covert the Rune Essence into bank notes and then sell the notes to the shop near the village. Next, you’ll need to buy them back in real form and go to the altar where you’ll craft the nature runes. It may seem like a lot but considering how much they can be worth, you’ll be glad you put forth the effort.
